<b>Hotel Features.</b> Built in 1910 by King Alfonso Xlll as a grand luxury hotel to match Europe's finest, the Hotel Ritz Madrid occupies a six-storey building with French windows and balconies. The large marble-floored lobby has pillars, high ceilings, chandeliers and handmade carpets.
A piano player accompanies afternoon tea and scones in the lobby lounge and bar. Goya Restaurant has chandeliers, fabric-covered walls and high draped curtains and serves international and Spanish dishes. Guests and locals can drink and dine in the Ritz Terrace and Gardens during spring and summer. The bimonthly Ritz Gastronomic Weeks present Spanish regional cuisine in association with famous restaurateurs. Cocktails and snacks are on the menu in the intimate wood-panelled Velazquez Bar.

All are double-glazed. Non-smoking rooms are available. Each room has its own unique decoration, with color tones picked out from the hand-made, patterned carpet. Much of the furniture dates back to the 1910 opening, including the ample fitted wardrobes, which reflect an age when vacationers did not travel light. All rooms have a desk and chair, comfortable armchair and table, and Internet access. In the marble bathrooms, the baths are fitted with a handrail and designer toiletries. Towels hang on radiators, bathrobes and slippers are supplied.</p>

<b>Getting there.</b> A regular underground metro service runs from the airport to central Madrid. The station is located in terminal 2 and is on line 8 (pink). The single fare is 1.75 EUR. An airport bus runs to central Madrid's Plaza de Colon terminal. The bus departs every 10 minutes and tickets cost 2.40 EUR. Taxis into the city centre cost about 30 EUR, including an airport surcharge.

An extensive public bus and metro system offers a cheap and efficient way to get around the city. Single tickets can be bought from bus drivers or machines.
